A UK eBay seller comparing finance should start with the reason cash is needed. A one-off stock purchase, repeated replenishment, equipment investment and a short settlement gap may call for different arrangements.

A merchant cash advance or other sales-based offer can be convenient, but it should be compared with the full range of options actually available to the business. The useful comparison is net cash, total cost and the effect on trading—not simply the amount offered.

Build the repayment scenario using our guide, MCA Repayments in a UK Cash-Flow Forecast: 13-Week Guide.

What does eBay Seller Capital currently offer?

eBay’s UK help page identifies YouLend and Liberis as its finance partners. It distinguishes one-off sales-based funding from Flexible Growth Funding, which allows multiple fundings within available capital. The partners assess applications and set terms; an invitation does not guarantee approval. eBay says only one active Seller Capital financing type is permitted per eBay account at a time. This means the choice is not always between one marketplace advance and a traditional bank loan. Review the current products shown to your business and ask the named provider how they differ.

Option one: compare a one-off amount with repeat access

A one-off facility can be easier to match to a specific purchase. Record the supplier cost, expected selling period, funding fee and collections until the obligation is cleared.

Repeat-access funding may be useful to investigate where stock purchases occur in stages. It still requires discipline: each use of funds can create a new cost and add to future collections.

Ask how available capital is calculated, whether it can change, what each funding costs and how overlapping balances are handled. Do not assume an available limit is permanent or that every future request will be approved.

A useful internal rule is to link each draw to a documented stock or cash requirement. That makes it easier to see whether the facility supports profitable turnover or merely hides a recurring deficit.

Option two: investigate a business loan

A loan proposal may suit a defined spending plan with predictable payments, depending on the terms and the business’s eligibility. Compare the payment dates with the expected cash generated by the stock or project.

For a loan comparison, record net proceeds, total payable, instalments, term, fees, security and any guarantee. Check early-settlement treatment if the plan is to repay quickly after selling a batch of inventory.

Do not compare a flat funding fee directly with an annual loan rate. Use the total payments and their timing on consistent assumptions.

Option three: ask suppliers about payment terms

Supplier credit can be worth discussing where there is an established relationship. Ask whether payment can be staged, linked to delivery or deferred for an agreed period.

Supplier terms are not automatically free. A supplier may offer a discount for immediate payment, charge more for extended terms or require a deposit. Compare the actual written alternatives.

For a hypothetical £10,000 order, a 2% immediate-payment discount is £200. If external funding costs £600 solely to obtain that discount, the discount alone does not justify the funding. Other benefits, such as securing stock availability, would need their own evidence.

Do not assume the supplier will extend terms or that missed payment dates are acceptable. Agree the arrangement before relying on it in the cash forecast.

Option four: consider an overdraft or revolving facility

Where available, a facility that can be drawn and repaid as cash needs change may be worth comparing with a fixed lump sum. Check the limit, charges, interest calculation, review conditions and circumstances in which repayment can be demanded.

Use the expected daily or weekly balance rather than assuming the whole limit will be used for the entire period. Also test what happens if access is reduced or not renewed when the business expects to reorder stock.

The availability of a facility is not a reason to leave stock decisions untested. Slow-moving inventory can keep the balance outstanding longer than planned and increase the cost.

Ask about any personal guarantee or security separately from the headline limit.

Option five: match equipment to asset finance

If the requirement is a van, warehouse equipment or another durable asset, investigate whether an asset-finance proposal is available. Compare the deposit, periodic payments, ownership outcome, maintenance responsibilities and end-of-term conditions.

This may preserve working capital for inventory, but the full agreement still needs to fit the business. An asset used for several years has a different cash profile from a seasonal stock purchase expected to sell within weeks.

Obtain a quotation for the actual equipment and compare the total cost with other ways of buying or using it. Do not assume every asset or seller qualifies.

Understand the base for eBay sales-based collections

eBay’s UK guidance says sales-based payments use daily gross sales, including taxes, postage and other order-related fees, with deductions from available funds before payouts. It also says early payment does not reduce an agreed one-time fixed fee. Confirm the terms of the specific proposal. Source: eBay payments and fees guidance.

This matters when comparing a sale’s margin with its funding collection. Postage collected from the buyer may be needed to pay the carrier; tax collected may not be available for stock purchases. A collection base can be broader than the amount you regard as product revenue.

Build the forecast from the contract’s definition and your actual costs rather than using a dashboard total without adjustment.

Compare the same usable amount

Suppose three hypothetical proposals each appear to provide £20,000. One releases the full amount, another deducts £500 upfront and a third first settles £4,000 of an existing balance. They provide £20,000, £19,500 and £16,000 respectively before any other differences.

A project requiring £20,000 cannot treat those as equal offers. Ask each provider to show net proceeds and total future payments clearly.

Then compare the timing. A lower total cost can still create difficult instalments before inventory sells. A flexible collection can still consume too much margin during the busiest selling period.

These examples explain comparison principles and are not offers from eBay or its partners.

Stress-test inventory and returns

Forecast a slower selling period, a lower selling price and higher returns. Include storage, postage, packaging, marketplace charges, advertising and existing finance.

If the stock is concentrated in one product or supplier, consider what happens if demand falls or delivery is delayed. Avoid treating a recent bestseller as guaranteed future turnover.

Track the lowest cash balance and the next supplier deadline. A funding choice should leave the business able to fulfil orders and manage returns, not only purchase the next batch.

Frequently asked questions

Is eBay itself the lender?

No. Its UK guidance identifies finance partners that assess applications, set terms and manage the funding.

Prepare the application records using our guide, Merchant Cash Advance Documents UK.

Is Flexible Growth Funding cost-free until the limit is exhausted?

Do not assume that. Ask how each funding is priced and how balances and collections interact. Review the actual agreement.

Is a supplier discount enough to justify borrowing?

Compare the discount with the full funding cost and any other measurable benefit. The arithmetic may show that the discount alone is insufficient.

Can I use another facility alongside Seller Capital?

Check both agreements and disclose existing funding. Do not assume that additional finance is permitted or affordable simply because another offer is available.
