An online comparison site can help you identify potential funding routes quickly. A business finance broker may provide more detailed help explaining a complex requirement and presenting it to suitable providers. But the distinction is not absolute: some comparison sites operate as brokers, and some brokers offer largely automated matching.
Check the remaining approval steps in our guide, Business Loan Pre-Approval UK: Soft Checks vs Final Approval.
Choose based on the service actually provided. Ask who will receive your information, which lenders are considered, how the intermediary is paid and who helps once you move beyond an initial match.
Neither a broker recommendation nor a comparison ranking guarantees approval, the lowest price or the best outcome for every business.
Understand who you are dealing with
The British Business Bank’s guide to commercial finance brokers explains the role of intermediaries in helping businesses access finance, including through lender panels. The presence of a panel means coverage deserves attention: a provider not on the panel may not appear in the comparison.
Before entering details, identify the company operating the website. Is it the lender, a broker, a comparison service or a business passing enquiries to another intermediary? A polished application form does not answer that question.
| Question | Broker service | Online comparison service |
|---|---|---|
| What is being compared? | Ask about panel and product specialisms | Ask about displayed providers and ranking method |
| Is there personal help? | Confirm who reviews and presents the case | Confirm whether support continues after matching |
| What does it cost? | Check borrower fees and lender commission | Check referral payments, fees and sponsored placement |
| Where does data go? | Ask which providers receive the submission | Ask whether details are passed to brokers or lenders |
| What is the outcome? | Potential application support and offers | Potential matches, quotes or referrals |
Use the table as a set of questions, not an assumption that every business follows the same model.
When a broker may add practical value
A business with several entities, seasonal accounts, existing security or a complicated purchase may need more explanation than an online form captures. A broker familiar with the relevant product can help organise the information and identify questions that need resolving before an application.
For example, a manufacturer buying equipment while refinancing a current facility needs clarity on settlement, security release and the new payment schedule. A staffing company funding payroll may need invoice-finance expertise rather than a general list of unsecured loans.
Ask for evidence of relevant experience and explain the intended transaction in plain terms. A broker specialising in commercial property is not automatically the right intermediary for a small card-sales advance.

Confirm the scope in writing. Does the service include preparing the application, comparing written offers, explaining conditions and helping with completion? Or does it only introduce your contact details to a lender?
When an online comparison may be enough to start
If the business has a straightforward requirement and reliable financial records, an online service may help narrow the options. It can be useful for learning which product categories and published eligibility rules are relevant before making a full application.
Check whether results are personalised offers or only indicative matches. A displayed rate may be a starting rate, representative example or advertising figure. It should not be treated as the price your business will receive without the provider’s assessment.
Read how the results are ordered. Price, eligibility estimates, commercial relationships and sponsored positions are different ranking methods. A provider displayed first is not automatically the cheapest for your specific borrowing amount and term.
You may still need direct contact to resolve guarantees, early settlement, security or an unusual cash-flow pattern. An efficient initial search does not replace reading the agreement.

Compare lender coverage
Ask an intermediary how many providers it considers for the relevant product and which suitable routes are outside its panel. A large total panel is less useful if only a few members offer the type of finance you need.
The NACFB’s broker-and-lender information describes access to bank and non-bank lenders working with intermediaries. Trade-body participation can be one source of information about a broker, but it does not establish that every lender or product is covered.
For a comparison site, identify whether it lists direct lenders, brokers or both. Two entries can potentially lead to the same underlying funder. Ask before submitting duplicate applications through different routes.
Do not assume “whole of market” means every provider is accessible on identical terms. Request a clear explanation of exclusions and the basis of that description.
Understand fees and commission before proceeding
Ask whether you pay an upfront fee, an offer fee, a completion fee or an ongoing service charge. Establish when it becomes payable, whether VAT applies and what happens if funding is declined or you decide not to proceed.
Also ask whether the intermediary receives commission from the lender and whether the amount varies between products or providers. Commission is not automatically evidence of unsuitable advice, but knowing the arrangement helps you assess possible incentives.
An advertised service with no borrower fee can still be paid through a referral or commission arrangement. Conversely, a borrower-paid fee does not by itself prove independence or superior coverage.
Obtain the fee agreement before authorising work. Keep it separate from the lender’s finance agreement so that the obligations of each party remain clear.
A hypothetical cost comparison
Suppose two routes provide £30,000 of usable funding. These figures are invented and do not represent a provider’s quotation.
| Cost item | Route A | Route B |
|---|---|---|
| Total lender repayments | £34,200 | £33,900 |
| Separate intermediary fee | £0 | £600 |
| Total cash paid for finance and intermediary | £34,200 | £34,500 |
| Net cash received | £30,000 | £30,000 |
| Total cost above net funding | £4,200 | £4,500 |
Route B has lower lender repayments but a higher combined cost after the separate fee. If that fee is deducted before payout instead, the net cash figure also changes and must be recalculated.
The cheaper total is not the only consideration. The payment dates, guarantee, security and support needed to complete the transaction may differ. Compare those terms explicitly rather than assigning a monetary value to unspecified “service”.
Control data sharing and applications
Ask who will receive your bank statements, financial records and personal details. Read the privacy notice and distinguish a comparison enquiry from permission to submit full applications.
Maintain a record of providers already approached. Tell a broker about direct applications and tell another intermediary about earlier submissions. This reduces duplication and makes it easier to track credit checks and offer conditions.
Ask whose credit file is checked, whether the check is soft or hard and at what stage. A soft initial match does not establish the process for the eventual lender application.
Use secure submission methods provided by the genuine firm. Verify unexpected requests for additional documents through a known contact route rather than replying automatically to an unfamiliar message.
Check permissions without assuming universal protection
The FCA’s firm-checking guidance explains how to verify a firm’s status and relevant permissions, including checking contact details against official records. Use those tools where regulated activity is involved and when a business claims FCA authorisation.
Business finance is not uniformly regulated. The Financial Services Register itself cautions that a listing does not confirm that Financial Ombudsman Service or compensation protection will definitely apply. Ask which permissions and complaint routes cover your particular service and agreement.
Do not mistake trade-body membership for statutory authorisation, or authorisation for one activity as proof that every product is regulated. Obtain a clear explanation where the position is uncertain.
Questions for either service
- Are you the lender, broker or introducer?
- Which providers and product categories will you consider?
- What suitable options are outside your coverage?
- How are results ranked or recommendations selected?
- What fees do I pay, when, and under what cancellation conditions?
- What commission or referral payment do you receive?
- Who receives my information and who performs credit checks?
- Who supports the application after an initial match?
- Which complaints process applies?
Frequently asked questions
Is a broker always more expensive?
No. Compare the full finance cost and any separate fee. A route with no visible borrower fee is not necessarily the cheapest, and a fee-paying route is not necessarily better.
Does a comparison site show every lender?
Do not assume so. Check its panel, exclusions and ranking method. Some services introduce enquiries to other brokers rather than comparing direct offers themselves.
Can I use both routes?
You can research through both, but coordinate submissions. Keep an application log and avoid sending the same case to the same funder through several intermediaries without clarification.
Choose the service that resolves your actual need
For a straightforward requirement, transparent online matching may be a useful starting point. For a complex transaction, relevant hands-on support may add value. In either case, compare coverage, full cost, data handling and the terms of the funding itself.
To discuss your requirement with Mehmi Financial Group, contact the team and ask about available support, provider coverage and any fees for your location and circumstances. Bring details of existing commitments and applications already made so the next steps can be coordinated.
