What are Accrued Expenses?

Accrued expenses are costs a company has incurred, but has not yet received an invoice.

For example, a manufacturing company owes its employees $25,000 in wages for the last week of December, but payday isn't until January 3rd — that $25,000 is recorded as an accrued expense on the December 31st balance sheet.
