What is a Fiscal Year End?

Fiscal year-end is the date on which a company finishes a 12-month accounting period. The fiscal year may differ from the calendar year depending on the needs of the company.

For example, a construction company chooses October 31st as its fiscal year end because work volumes are typically lower in fall, giving its accountant time to prepare statements without disrupting peak operations. Its financials, tax returns, and loan renewals are all timed around this annual date.
