What is a Late Fee?

A fee charged when a payment is not made by the due date.

For example, a lease agreement specifies a $150 late fee if the monthly payment isn't received by the 5th of the month. A business that pays on the 10th is charged the late fee, which is added to the next statement — and repeated late fees may be flagged as a risk indicator by the lender.
