What are Par Value Of Shares?

Par value is the nominal value assigned to a share, usually unrelated to its market value and mainly used for accounting purposes.

For example, a newly incorporated company issues shares with a par value of $1.00 each. When an investor purchases 10,000 shares at $5.00 each, $10,000 goes to share capital at par and $40,000 above par is recorded as contributed surplus on the balance sheet.
