What is a Prepayment?

Paying down principal before it is due, which can reduce future interest.

For example, after a strong quarter, a contractor makes a $20,000 prepayment on its $80,000 equipment loan, reducing the outstanding principal to $60,000. This lowers future interest charges and shortens the remaining amortization period, subject to any prepayment rules in the loan agreement.
