What are Pre-Paid Expenses?

Pre-paid expenses are payments made in advance for goods or services that will be received in the future.

For example, a technology company pays its annual insurance premium of $18,000 in January as a pre-paid expense. Each month, $1,500 is transferred from the pre-paid expense account on the balance sheet to the insurance expense on the income statement as the coverage is consumed.
