What is an Insolvent?

Insolvent means a business is unable to pay its debts when they are due or its liabilities are greater than its assets.

For example, a retailer whose current liabilities ($320,000) exceed its current assets ($180,000) is technically insolvent on a balance sheet basis. A lender or supplier discovering this may demand immediate payment or refuse to extend further credit.
